The Hurricanes No Longer in the Running for Timo Meier 2b673z

The trade market is getting hot and heavy ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline. However, there are only so many pieces and so many contenders to target.

The San Jose Sharks have reportedly told the Carolina Hurricanes that they are no longer in the running for the services of Timo Meier, reports our contributor Pierre LeBrun.

The New Jersey Devils are one of the teams who want to make a massive move. Their target has always been Timo Meier, according to information from LeBrun published Sunday morning.

“It’s definitely not easy. It’s a challenging part of our business. Sometimes you have to remind yourself to keep your thoughts on the task ahead, not go too crazy in your head, and just go out there and have fun.” Meier said.

“It’s fun to work with the guys, even though we haven’t had too much success. It’s nice to win and definitely the mood changes when we do. For me, you can only focus on what you can control.” he added.

The difference between Meier and other deadline options is that he wouldn’t be a rental. As an RFA, he won’t walk to the open market this summer.

Instead, the team he’s on holds his rights and can either sign him to his $10 million qualifying offer, give him an extension or trade his rights elsewhere.

The St. Louis Blues, meanwhile, they have emerged as a potential suitor for Meier after acquiring two additional 2023 first-round picks from the Vladimir Tarasenko and Ryan O’Reilly trades.

It gives the Blues the draft capital needed to work out a deal with the Sharks, in addition to having desirable prospects in Jimmy Snuggerud and Zachary Bolduc.

Meier, who will become a restricted free agent this summer, has 31 goals and 21 assists in 57 games since the start of the season.

The Swiss has 154 goals and 162 assists in 451 games since the start of his career. He was picked 9th overall by the Sharks in 2015.
