Brazilian soccer legend Pele died on Thursday at the Albert Einstein Hospital, Sao Paulo, at the age of 82.

Pele is a football legend who won three World Cup titles and became one of the most influential sports figures.

The Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo, where Pele was undergoing treatment, said he died at 15:27 local time “due to multiple organ failure resulting from the development of colon cancer related to a previous medical condition.”

“We are all thanks to you,” wrote his daughter Kely Nascimento on Instagram.

“We love you endlessly. Rest in peace,” he continued.

On Thursday, it was announced that Pele would be buried on Monday and Tuesday at the Vila Belmiro Santos Stadium outside Sao Paulo, where the football legend played some of his best football.

The news of Pele’s death was also confirmed by social media s managed by his agent.

“Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pelé, who ed away peacefully today,” read a statement on Pele’s Instagram .

In his travels, Edson captivated everyone with his sporting genius, stopped wars, did charitable work around the world, and spread what he believed most of all to be the cure for all of our problems: love.”

“His life message became a legacy for future generations.”

“Love, love and love, forever.”

During his career as a footballer, Pele has a statistical record that no other player has.

Pele is the only player to win three World Cup titles in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

Pele scored a record 1281 goals in 1363 games (including ‘non-official’ matches).

However, if only taking official goals, Pele scored 643 official goals for Santos, becoming the second-highest goalscoring player of all time with a single club (Lionel Messi’s first most was 672 for Barcelona).

Pele won six Brazilian titles, two Copa Livertadores titles and two Intercontinental Cups with Santos (1962 & 1963).

With his 12 goals, he is now t 6th highest alongside Kylian Mbappe.

Pele is 1 of 5 players to have scored in 4 different World Cups, along with Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Klose and Uwe Seeler.

Pele scored 77 goals for Brazil, in just 92 matches.

Pele was Brazil’s only top scorer for more than 60 years (1962-2022) until he was equalized by Neymar at the 2022 World Cup.

Pele made his debut for the Brazilian national team at the age of 16, and played his last game at the age of 31 (in 1971).

Pele is the youngest player at a World Cup to score a goal (17 years, 239 days), score a hat trick (17 years, 244 days) and score in a final (17 years 249 days).

In 2000, Pele was named the FIFA Player of the Century (for the 20th Century), receiving almost 3/4 of the votes of FIFA officials, journalists and coaches (72.8%).

Meanwhile, Diego Maradona won the voting which was conducted on the internet, so that the two were named Co-Players of the Century.
