Italian tennis player Camila Giorgi is being investigated into amid claims that she traveled the world in 2022, including to the Australian Open the last year, with a fake Covid certificate.
Giorgi allegedly entered Australia in 2022 with false documents to play the Australian Open in Melbourne.
She may be one of the patients of two anti-vaccine doctors from Italy who are said to have planned the fraud scheme.
If it is proven that Giorgi lied about his vaccination status, she could face consequences in the countries she traveled to.
The Australian media highlighted the situation of the Italian, recalling that to enter Australia last year, vaccination was a mandatory requirement.
According to the Department of Home Affairs, proving the supply of fake documents can cause a person to have their visa application denied or cancelled.
The WTA said it was aware of the allegations and was monitoring the Italian police investigation.
“We are aware of the allegations and are currently monitoring the situation and any investigations that may be brought forward,” a WTA spokesperson told News Corp.
Dr Grillone has co-operated with investigators revealing her surgery in Veneto at times had queues of people waiting for fake vaccinations as word spread about the scam.
“The Giorgi family has been under treatment with me for a long ttime” Grillone told Italian daily Corriere del Veneto.
“Camila Giorgi suffered from the so-called tennis elbow. Shortly before the beginning of summer, she had come asking for the possibility of obtaining false attestations of all the mandatory vaccines, as well as the Covid vaccine,”
“I can confirm with absolute certainty that none of the vaccines against the Giorgi family have actually been istered. I have not received any payment in that case.” Dr Grillone added.
